The Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan is restricted to those who are permanent citizens of the Yukon Territory.

The following summarizes the Yukon Health Care Insurance Program:

Health Benefits:

  • Physician services, care and treatment, including pregnancy.
  • Some dental-surgical procedures performed in an approved hospital.

Services that are not covered include:

  • Optometrists and opticians, including the provision of eyeglasses.
  • Appliances such as braces, walkers, etc.
  • Podiatrist, osteopath, orthodontist and chiropractor services.
  • Third party medical examinations.
  • Prescriptions and/or medical supplies.

Hospital Benefits:

  • Accommodation and meals at standard rate.
  • Necessary nursing services and services provided by other hospital staff.
  • Diagnostic procedures, including x-rays, laboratory services.
  • Radiotherapy and physiotherapy services where available.
  • Outpatient services.

Services that are not covered include:

  • Nursing home services.
  • Appliances i.e. crutches.
  • Dental procedures, unless prior approval has been obtained.
  • Prescription drugs for use outside of the hospital.

Yukon Health also offers programs including:

  • Children’s Drug and Optical Program for low income families with children under the age of 19 for prescription and eye care costs.
    Chronic Disease Program which provides benefits such as prescription drugs, medical/surgical supplies and equipment, food supplements, or prostheses for Yukon residents who have a chronic disease and/or serious functional disability.
  • Pharmacare for seniors living in the Yukon which covers all insured physician, hospital and senior benefits, and offers coverage for prescriptions as well as certain non-prescription items, i.e. syringes for diabetics.
  • Extended Health for seniors to cover such costs as medical/surgical supplies, hearing aids, dental care, eye examinations and glasses.
