The following summarizes the PEI health care plan:
Medical Services:
These services are insured:
- Most physician services in an office, hospital or in patients’ home.
- Medically necessary surgical services.
- Obstetrical services, including pre and post-natal care, new-born care.
- Certain oral surgery procedures when performed by an oral surgeon in a hospital
when medically required.
- Male and female sterilizations; reversals are not insured.
- Certain insured specialist services when referred by an attending physician.
Services that are not insured include:
- Third-party examinations.
- Immunizations.
- Eye glasses, hearing aids, artificial limbs or other devices.
- Acupuncture, audiologist, chiropodist, chiropractor, dietician, homeopath,
naturopath, optometrist, physiotherapist, podiatrist, osteopath, psychologist
and dentist services.
Hospital Services:
These services are insured (some are available for out-patient services):
- Meals and accommodations at standard rate.
- Nursing services that are necessary.
- Laboratory, x-rays and diagnostic procedures.
- Radiotherapy and physiotherapy.
- Operating room, routine surgical supplies, and anesthetic facilities.
These services are not insurable:
- Ambulance user fees within the province; all ambulance fees outside of the
province.
- Some prosthetic devices, crutches.
- Dental extractions, unless patient is medically required to be in hospital or
unless there is prior approval.
